A fire early Monday morning may have destroyed a home in Qauia, Lami, but it has done nothing to dampen the spirits of its owners.

Home owner Vasemaca Bamesi, 54, said the family was planning a big Christmas celebration at their home where all her children and grandchildren would come. The plan may have been dented slightly, but the celebration is still on.

“My husband Taniela Naisua Senior and I were away in Nadi when the house caught fire. The house has been in the family for more than 40 years,” she said.

Ms Bamesi’s son Taniela Naisua Jr was home when the fire occurred.

He said they suspected that the fire started from the wood fire stove situated at the back of the house. He said the stove may not have been properly extinguished.

“My sister Rosie and her husband Orisi were in a room towards the front of the house and they managed to save some clothes,” he said.

“Otherwise everything in the house, the fridge, television, microwave and all electronics and furniture has been destroyed.

“The fire trucks came fast and although they could not save our home, they were able to save my aunt’s home which is almost joined to ours.”

Ms Bamesi said her daughter Rosie were due to leave for Matuku in Lau because she had been given a teaching post there.

“My daughter had just bought all her things which included a laptop, beddings, kitchenware and clothing to take to Lau. All have been destroyed,” she said.

“And yes, we will need help to rebuild. We plan to do that. I am glad no one was hurt ”

The family has moved to the home of relatives just next door.
