Fiji’s Biggest Christmas Tree To Be Lit Up Tomorrow

The tallest Christmas tree the nation has seen will be lit up this Friday at the My Suva Picnic Park this Friday.

Suva City Council, telecom giants Vodafone and Fijian Broadcasting Corporation have come together to put up a tree that will be 30 metres tall, equivalent to a six storey building. Suva City Council chief executive officer Azam Khan said the tree is being constructed by the council workers.

“The structure is a feat of engineering and ingenuity shown by the council workers. It is designed to withstand cyclone speed winds and conditions,” Mr Khan said.

“We are anticipating the tree will be up by Thursday and we can do the lighting on Friday.

“I expect the events following the lighting of the tree to bring about normalcy and provide Fijians something to do as we lead up to Christmas.”

Vodafone’s chief marketing officer Rajnesh Prasad said the company had kept up the Christmas tradition.

“Last year we had to take the tree down because of Cyclone Yasa. This year we expect to provide families an opportunity to spend time together,” he said.

The tree will be lit up on Friday. After this, there are to be events held every night for the public to enjoy.

The Suva City Council urged members of the public to follow COVID-19 protocols when they come to the park.

The Fiji Police Force and the council are expected to be working together to enforce the guidelines.
