Pearls coach Unaisi Rokoura is the latest addition to the Fiji National Sports Commission International Qualified Coaching Grant.

Fiji National Sports Commission executive chairman, Peter Mazey confirmed that $1 million was allocated for local coaches salary budget for the 2020-21 financial year.

“Unaisi will be paid under our International Qualified Coaching Grant, as she was selected for her internationally recognised qualifications,” Mazey said.

“The budget provided under the Internationally Qualified Coaches Grant in the current fiscal year of 1 Aug 2021 – 31 July 2022 is $1,000,000,” he said.

“We are not looking at any coaches having salary cuts in the next fiscal year but this will depend on each national sporting organisation’s (NSO) approach.”

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in pay cut of coaches and staff of various sporting bodies in the past year.

Other local coaches who were under the international coaching grant are Fijiana sevens coach, Saiasi Fuli, Fijiana 15s coach Senirusi Seruvakula and Fijian Bati coach, Joe Rabele.

“I think it important to note that when the Coaches Grant was put in place by the Prime Minister in 2013 that there was a distinct lack of Internationally Qualified Coaches for all our sports,” Mazey said.

“The guidelines put in place for access to this Grant for all NSO’s from the beginning was the requirement of Fijian coaches to work with and be trained under any appointed International Coach.”

“Further funding was also provided to assist NSO’s to bring in trainers to ensure Fijians were able to obtain the top international qualifications for their particular sport.”

“The result of this approach is obvious with the appointment of Fijians to positions in rugby, rugby league and netball.”

“Also other NSO’s who benefitted from the grant now have Fijian coaches being table tennis, weightlifting, and cricket.”
