90-Year-Old Building Under Maintenance

One of the older buildings in the capital city is undergoing repairs thanks to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
The Fiji Girl Guides Association building in Malcom Street in Suva is estimated to be more than 90 years old and listed under national heritage.
Association’s incoming board chair Sera Saladuadua said the roof had become old and was on the verge of collapsing.
“We are grateful to the RFMF for choosing our building as part of their community project. The repairs to the building and the roof were much needed,” she said.
“The cyclone season is upon us and the safety of this building is very important. The soldiers not only repaired the roof, but also cut trees around the building to ensure they did not fall and damage it.
“The main thing for us is that the building is a heritage site and that we keep its integrity. That has been done and we thank the RFMF.”
Ms Saladuadua said one of the halls was part of the old Suva Grammar School.
The RFMF Engineers Corp take up community projects each year where they choose buildings and homes to repair and improve.
This year, the Fiji Girl Guides Association and building and the Golden Age Home in Samabula were chosen by the soldiers.
