Two of the next three tropical cyclones expected to make landfall in Fiji this cyclone season could be destructive and Fijians need to be prepared for any worst case scenario.

This was the message from Acting Director of Meteorology Terry Atalifo.

“Most of us have experienced severe cyclones in the past like Winston and Yasa and I think the community in Fiji would know the damaging impacts of these cyclones,” he said.

Mr Atalifo also said Fiji anticipates three cyclones in this cyclone season and their team were closely monitoring the country’s weather system in this season.

He added that the trough of low pressure near the Solomon Islands would not directly have any impact on Fiji. However, it was over the group, especially in Vanua Levu and Northern Lau group

As a result, Mr Atalifo clarified there were no cyclone threats anticipated at this current stage.

“The chances of this developing in the next few days is low, but it is going to increase when we move towards the beginning of next week,” he said.

“The good news is that it will not directly affect Fiji, it is just going to linger around the south-west of Solomon Islands.”

“We are moving into the peak of the cyclone season and a lot of us are complaining about the heat because it’s quite hot and humid. This is because we are in the season.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and advise everyone on when the situation comes.”

Severe cyclones

Mr Atalifo said Fijians were well versed with the damaging impacts of cyclones and needed to be more prepared this time around.

“Whether it’s due to the wind or it’s just because of the heavy rain that causes flooding.

“People need to prepare now and not wait until the last minute.”

He said preparations needed to be done as families await the Met services advice.

“Just be prepared while you enjoy Christmas and keep alert to warnings and information that come out of the authorities.”
