Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum officially opened the Commercial Amusement Billiard & Kava Centre in Suva on Monday night.

While speaking at the event, the A-G highlighted the critical importance of having small and medium businesses thrive — not only to make a profit for themselves but to also increase economic activity and improve the livelihoods of those who were out of work during the pandemic.

He commended the resilience, commitment and positive drive of entrepreneurs for investing in such entertainment businesses that will not only provide some leisure space for the neighbouring communities but also create employment opportunities for Fijians.

Commercial Mini Mart Director, Nausheem Ali said the company had initially started with the supermarket and after one year the idea to set up the entertainment facility was one way of allowing Fijians to relax after the lockdown due to COVID-19.

“The amusement centre is designed to create that joyful environment particularly for university students that merely want to relax over a grog bowl or play billiard with friends.”

The amusement centre, which is situated in the bustling Laucala Bay area, comprises a billiard centre, kava bar and spacious room to host private events.

Mr Ali thanked the Government for the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) grant of $50,000 which greatly assisted him in completing the $120,000 project.
