An early Christmas celebration for the people of Sese Village and Volivoli Primary School in Macuata.

This is after the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Jone Usamate commissioned a borehole project putting an end to water problems.

“Today is a day of celebration as you will now have a consistent supply of clean water,” Mr Usamate said.

The $106,467.23 project would benefit 140 Fijians in Sese Village and 131 students of Volivoli Primary School.

“Through this project, villagers and students will now be able to enjoy a better quality of life as water plays a critical role in their daily lives; from drinking, bathing, washing and cleaning,” he said.

“However, villagers must not abandon and should continue to use and maintain other water sources such as rainwater harvesting.”

Groundwater is a supplementary source and must be strictly used for drinking purposes only during the dry periods of the year.

He said access to clean water was not only a basic need of mankind, but a necessity to sustain all forms of life.

“From today, the responsibility of monitoring, maintaining, managing, and protecting the groundwater resource and as well as the water supply infrastructure belongs to you the villagers and the school board.

“I therefore urge you all to support your water committees in any scheduled maintenance activities and also fund raising drives.”

He said this would ensure that access to water was not disrupted and the scheme was sustainable.

Navukebuli Village

Mr Usamate also commissioned a borehole project at Navukebuli Village in Macuata.

He revealed that Fiji’s 5 Year and 20 Year National Development Plan sets an ambitious target to have 100 per cent access to safe, drinking water by 2030.

“It is Government’s intent that no one is left behind particularly our rural and maritime dwellers,” he said.

“Access to clean water for our people is absolutely fundamental to our future development and for the prosperity of our people.”

The $69, 217.25 borehole project would benefit 11 households.
