Minister for Education Premila Kumar is reminding all the heads of schools to secure all properties before the school closes today (Friday).

While speaking to the heads of schools in Seaqaqa District, Macuata on Wednesday, she said everyone was well aware of the cyclone season.

“Warnings have been given well in advance and this means you need to start acting now to secure school assets and property before you put the lock,” Ms Kumar said.

“For example placing the generator and computers on a higher place where flood waters cannot reach.”

She said there were few cyclones in the past that caused devastation which hampered the progress of the schools.

“Whatever facilities you have in the school, you need to check that it is safe and in a securely placed.”

She said the Ministry has been working with the donors and Government to help all the schools that were damaged by Tropical Cyclone Yasa and Ana.

She was accompanied by the ministry’s permanent secretary Anjeela Jokhan and yesterday was their first official tour to the Northern Division.

Meanwhile, Ms Kumar handed over boxes of masks and sanitisers to six heads of schools.

They were Seaqaqa Central Primary, Navai Primary  School, Vunimanuca Primary School, Seaqaqa Muslim Primary School, Solove Primary School and Seaqaqa Central College.

She also donated a computer and printer each to Navai Primary School and Vunimanuca Primary school.

The two schools are located in Seaqaqa about six kilometres apart.

Navai Primary School headteacher Shanjesh Kumar and Vunimanuca Primary School head teacher Rohan Sharma thanked the ministry for the machines.
