The launch of MyDesk, which coincided with the reopening of international borders, was opportune and well-timed, Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, Faiyaz Koya said.

Speaking at the launch at Nadi Back Road, he said the work of MyDesk founder, Dipti Sharma, dated back to efforts that began five years ago.

Back then, Ms Sharma launched her digital marketing and corporate events company, Eventuros (Fiji).

International recognition
The success of Eventuros (Fiji) brought Ms Sharma international recognition, as a recipient of the TOP 50 Asia’s Women leaders – CMO ASIA World Women Leadership Congress in 2019.

Ms Sharma was shortlisted as a finalist of the Westpac Women in Business Awards’ Aspiring Entrepreneur category in 2018 and 2019.

Her quest to push beyond individual boundaries and motivate change was commended by Mr Koya.

He said her design had provided a space that empowered, fostered, and cultivated long-term job growth.

“With Fiji now “Open for Happiness”, Nadi will be receiving visitors from all walks of professions – seeking a convenient place to work remotely,” Mr Koya said.

Co-working
The concept of co-working was gaining momentum in Fiji, he said.

Co-working was a long-established concept worldwide designed for new age creatives, start-ups, established and freelancers seeking to build, network, and share resources and knowledge in their career, Mr Koya said.

With remote work becoming more common, MyDesk was realising opportunities and adapting to technology and the corporate world as they simultaneously advanced, he said.

“What co-working spaces also do is, they provide a higher level of independence and flexibility that we may not otherwise enjoy in a traditional office setting,” Mr Koya said.

Accelerators concept
In Dubai, where he recently visited, Mr Koya witnessed the Government Accelerators concept.

He said it was an initiative of the United Arab Emirates Government that integrated Government, private sector and non government organisations into one space.

“Essentially, they choose projects and collectively implement them within 100 days,” Mr Koya said.
Ms Sharma’s four-member women’s team, created MyDesk.

“Given the current economic conditions, it is essential that we continue to provide support and encouragement to young Fijians with innovative business ideas,” Mr Koya said.

“It is also important for collaboration – to create an entrepreneurial eco-system that offers the right support.

“I understand MyDesk has partnered with surrounding businesses to offer package deals and add value to their experience.

“Our job, as policy makers, is to provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive,” he added.
