A former fisherman and stroke victim, Mohammed Gani, was granted a Boxing Day gift on Sunday, in the form of a new wheelchair, courtesy of non-government organisation (NGO), We-Fiji.

Mr Gani’s youngest son, and sole breadwinner, Mohammed Iftakar, received the wheelchair on behalf of his father.

Mr Iftakar thanked the Suva-based NGO for their support.

Mr Iftakar talked about how the donated wheelchair would benefit their family in helping manage his father’s daily movements.

“My father’s health and physical condition has been the same for the past eight years now, so this is a light of hope on his path to managing his condition,” he said.

Mr Iftakar, who is employed by Safetech Electrical in Labasa, said his fears and tensions of whether his father was doing well at home would now be slightly reduced thanks to the wheelchair, assisting him to visit the washroom and move freely around in the house.

We-Fiji president, Mohammed Khan, said their assistance was always aimed at providing relief to persons with disabilities and in urgent need of medical support.

“I feel blessed to involve myself in helping and supporting the needy, sickly, disabled and vulnerable members of our society,” Mr Khan said.

For people having similar difficulties and unable to walk, they could contact We-Fiji on their website or on their Facebook page and lodge a request for a wheelchair.

“Our team and assessment incharge go through the requests for verification upon which they are assisted,” he said.

The family also has their eldest son who is bedridden and mentally disabled while Iftakar’s mother has a hearing impairment.

For people willing to help assist the family, Mr Iftakar, can be contacted on phone: 2195300/8382963.
