Lockdown for Golden Age Home

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, said they were still awaiting a final report on the actual number of COVID-19 cases in the home. Ms Akbar said the positive cases identified were linked to their Age Home carers. “Residents do not need to panic because we have our own COVID-safe protocols within the home with support provided by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services team in Labasa,” Ms Akbar said.

The Labasa Golden Age Home has gone into lockdown.

This comes following the confirmation of COVID-19 positive cases at the facility.

The home went into lockdown on December 25.

She said these staff members were currently undergoing observation and isolation and the ministry was following up on their health on a regular basis.

Ms Akbar said their health teams and support staff at the home continue to look after their residents and carers, who have contracted the COVID19 virus and were showing symptoms.

“We had similar type of cases at age homes in Viti Levu and we were able to control the transmission cases,” the Minister said.

Ms Akbar added they have not had a single death from their age homes in the country from the deadly COVID-19 virus. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
