Concern Over Students Not Wearing Masks Outside Schools

There is concern about students who were not wearing masks at the Suva Bus Station on Tuesday.
The matter has been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts. The ministry has contacted school heads to discuss the issue.
Minister Premila Kumar said they had advised the school heads on the need to talk to their students.
“This whole week is all about raising COVID-awareness. It is not only about COVID awareness in the schools, but generally about COVID,” Ms Kumar said.
“It is not just about wearing masks in school, but also when they go outside school.”
“These students, when they were not in the school, they were not wearing masks; the good thing about sending these students to school is that at least they will be well versed with the protocols required, but our team is working on that subject and there will be awareness raising in that area.”
“We are also talking with the Police Commissioner and the other team who can also assist. We have seen Police officers around and guiding the students on the wearing of masks.”
Police Commissioner, Brigadier-General Sitiven Qiliho, said they were urging students to comply.
He is also calling on parents and guardians to continuously talk to their children on the importance of complying with COVID-safe measures.
