Four children are alive thanks to their mother and a teacher who ran into a burning building to save their lives.

It began on Wednesday morning, when Susana Duaibe, also a teacher at Mataso Primary School, panicked when she saw black smoke emitting from the teacher’s quarters at Mataso Village in Ra.

Knowing her children were inside, Ms Duaibe dashed home, in an effort to rescue them all.

“When I entered the house, I saw three of my children coming out of the bathroom. They were bathing and did not know that the house was on fire. I did not care about anything else as we held them and ran outside as the house collapsed,” Ms Duaibe said.

“All I did was hug my children as we watched everything we had burned down in flames. The only thing we had was the clothes we were wearing. My children were only wearing their underwear as they were bathing.”

Ms Duaibe was not alone in this endeavour.

Another teacher, Joji Raqio, who ran into the house with her said he was happy that Ms Duaibe’s children were safe.

“When I saw the black smoke I quickly moved to the window and saw Ms Duaibe’s eldest daughter standing at the door.

I shouted to ask what was wrong, but she had this confused look and I realised something was wrong and that was when I ran like I had never run in my entire life,” Mr Raqio said.

“I nearly collided with Ms Duaibe in the passage as she also started running to her quarters after being made aware of the situation.

“She easily breezed past me because all she could think of were her four precious children.

“Ms Duaibe quickly gathered her three other children who were having their bath in the bathroom while her eldest daughter was already safe with us. She ushered them out of the house. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
