Gale Warning For Yasawa, Mamanuca As Depression Develops Into Category 1 Cyclone Later Today

A gale warning remains in force for the Yasawa and Mamanuca group, northern and western parts of Viti levu, western interior parts of Viti levu, Vatulele, Kadavu.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the rest of the Fiji group.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the fiji group.

Flash flood warning remains in force for all low lying areas of Vanua levu, Tavua, Rakiraki, Semo, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tailevu, Korovou.

Here’s the forecast released by the Weather Officer for Area 1 which includes, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Northern and Western parts of Viti Levu, Western interior parts of Viti Levu, Vatulele, Kadavu:

  • Expect damaging gale force winds with average speeds up to 65 km/hr and momentary gusts to 100 km/hr.
  • Periods of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms.
  • Very rough to high seas. damaging heavy swells.
  • Flooding including sea flooding of low-lying coastal areas expected. possible impacts: – Significant damage to houses of unshielded and very light structures in exposed communities
  • Isolated loss of communication and electricity supply due to damaged power lines
  • Some plants/crops tilted or damagedandtwigs of small trees may be broken andblocking/affecting transport routes
  • Some localised businesses likely to be affectedwith flash flooding of low lying areas
  • Localised flooding of iris crossing, informal settlements causing disruption to traffic flow
  • High risk of sea travel for all types of sea crafts
  • Risky hazardous breaking waves and coastal inundation of debris along low lying coastal areas especially during high tides -Risky rip current reaching low lying coastal areas

The Depression is expected to move towards East-Southeast at About 10km/Hr and the centre should pass about 225 kilometres southwest of Viwa at 6pm today and about 190km southwest of Nadi at midnight tonight.

Forecast position: 12hr or midday today: 18.6s 175.5e or about 225km southwest Of Viwa and 235km west-southwest of Nadi

  • 24hr or midnight tonight: 19.0s 175.9e or about 215km southwest of Nadi and 240km west of Kadavu
  • 36hr or midday monday: 19.4s 175.7e or about 260km southwest of Nadi and 270km west of Kadavu
  • 48hr or midnight Monday: 19.6s 175.3e or about 310km southwest of Nadi And 315km west-southwest of Kadavu

Based on the intensity forecast, the system is expected to be elevated to Category 1 today during its passage.

CAUTION: Damaging winds and cyclone impacts could begin several hours prior to the cyclone centres passes over or nearby. Thus, secure your homes and properties and know your evacuation centres.
