COVID-19 Cases In Schools Not Surprising, Says Dr Fong
Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr James Fong.

Ministry of Health and Medical Services Permanent Secretary Dr James Fong has cleared the air regarding COVID-19 cases recorded in schools over the past week.

Dr Fong says the fact that schools had recorded some cases of COVID-19 was not surprising at all for the ministry.

He said the Minstry has recorded cases in every sector of employment, and this includes teachers, doctors, nurses and many more.

He said it must be understood that there is a measure in place to deal with any case scenario.

“This is one of the reasons we advised the Ministry of Education to go with gradual opening,” Dr Fong said.

“That was for us to be able to practise the Standard Operating Procedure that was required to be implemented when you get cases.

“So, we sought out the case and whatever close contacts you have and protect the school environment.”

Education

Dr Fong said Fijians need to understand that education was important, and the space of education must be protected.

“There will be plenty of things that we’ll have to allow to happen in that space and if we make sure that the space around it is well protected, that space becomes a low-risk space.

“That’s why we have escalated our ability to dish out punitive measures on those that disobey the mandates that we have made.”

He said UNICEF had clearly defined that the type of receptive in the nose of children is much less, the receptive that the virus will latch on.

However, he said the ministry must still mitigate the risk where and when needed.
