A family from Vunika, Labasa are counting themselves lucky after a landslide barely missed hitting their house.

Rishi Deo, a business owner at Labasa Town, said the landslide took place in the early hours of Monday morning, during the heavy downpour and strong winds brought about by Tropical Cyclone Cody.

Mr Deo felt a sense of relief that the soil and debris from the landslide did not enter their house, which would have destroyed their belongings and possibly endangered their lives.

“When I woke up at 3am, I went to the front door to have a look around and noticed that the trees and coconut tree from the land above had moved into my compound, which shocked my family,” he said.

The 57-year-old said the soil and debris reached the veranda of the house because of the intensity of the landslide.

The family-of-three consisting of his only daughter and wife were assisted by neighbours on the same day to clean up the veranda and parts of the compound.
