Trevor Patterson was friend, colleague, and an older brother.

He will be greatly missed.

Shipping tycoon and managing director of Goundar Shipping Limited, George Goundar says of the late director of Patterson Shipping Ltd who is understood to have passed away past Saturday.

Mr Patterson was an iconic name in the local shipping industry and he was a very private person.

He and his brother, George Patterson, took over the shipping company from their father, Henry Patterson.

Growing Up In Levuka
Mr Goundar, Trevor and George Patterson and Venu Shipping Limited director Ben Naidu all grew up together and were from the great shipping families from Levuka, Ovalau in the Lomaiviti Group.

“Trevor was a great friend and brother for the last 60 years.”

“We went to Levuka Public School together, so he was just two years older than me.”

“We played hockey together in high school, he was my team captain.”

“This is a sad loss to the industry.”

Apart from running Patterson Shipping, Mr Patterson was also a registered licensed ship’s captain or shipmaster.

“After we left high school at Levuka, we came to Suva around 1980 to study at the then Fiji Institute of Technology (now Fiji National University FNU) in Samabula together.”

“He was studying to become a shipmaster and I was doing engineering.”

“We graduated together.”

“After I graduated I migrated to Canada and every time I came back to Fiji I would meet up with him or one of the brothers to see how they were doing.”

“I think he brought the Spirit of Harmony and Spirit Altruism from Europe.”

“Him and I grew up in the industry together.”

“He was a real sailor and the industry will miss him.”

“Whenever we meet it was always business and our differences aside and we would talk and we always respected each other,” Mr Goundar said.

When contacted yesterday, David Patterson, Trevor Patterson’s son, said they would provide further information in due course.

The company name has been synonymous in the shipping industry since 1928.

It first offered services between Lodoni Village and Levuka on its first vessel, AK Jubilee.

Today, Patterson Brothers Shipping, operates three roll- on, roll-off vessels MV Spirit of Harmony, MV Spirit of Love and MV Spirit of Altruism.

The vessels’ main routes are between Natovi-Ovalau but also operates to Nabouwalu, Kadavu and other maritime islands on charter services.
