37 Homes, Crops Damaged By Flood At Vatulaulau, Ba
The floods brought on by recent heavy rainfall has damaged 37 homes and affected many root crops at Vatulaulau Ba.
A concerned district president, Jasmine Nisha, highlighted that people living in the area relied heavily on their root crops for survival.
“When it rained the water came inside the homes, even the concrete houses were affected,” Ms Nisha said.
“We can’t plough the land because the soil is not fit to replant right now, but the cane farmers are looking forward to this new assistance that the Government just announced because around 22 cane farms were destroyed in the flood.”
She also said community members were grateful to the Police who helped around the community during the floods.
“Vatulaulau Sanatan School was provided as an evacuation centre, but people opted to stay with their relatives living nearby so the school was empty,” she said.
Ms Nisha said community members hoped donor agencies would possibly organise an assistance drive for affected families.
“We know that the Vatulaulau advisory council normally assists, but they have no funds as times are hard, but if someone helps us, it would be great,” she said.
The Commissioner West Mesake Ledua confirmed that food ration distribution was only done last week and not this week.
