Tongans In Fiji Organise Bucket Drive

Tongan communities in Fiji have organised a bucket drive to provide support for those affected by the volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga.
‘Api Tonga executive committee chairman, Kisione Finau said people could donate a bucket of breakfast crackers or $25 cash to help Tongan families in need.
Mr Finau said they have negotiated with the companies to give them a bucket of breakfast crackers for $23 and the extra $2 would help in meeting any additional costs.
He said the whole of Tonga had been affected by volcanic ashes which could lead to food insecurity.
“The whole country is devastated, the worst thing is that the country is filled with ashes and people are finding it difficult to breathe and there has been no rain,” Mr Finau said.
He said they have received reports that the leaves have turned yellow and the trees are likely to die in Tonga and food shortage can be an issue.
He said the biscuit containers once empty could be used to carry and store water.
‘Api Tonga Community Centre secretary Sina Kami said their target was for families affected in Tonga to get one bucket each.
The items would be sent to the Red Cross Society in Tonga which would then distribute them to all the affected areas in Tonga, especially the smaller islands.
Ms Kami said so far the response had been amazing.
The drive will close on Wednesday at 6pm. Those who wish to donate can make their way to ‘Api Tonga Community Centre in Laucala Bay in Suva or give cash donations or through M-PAiSA.
