Student Gets Suspended Sentence For Robbery

High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar provided a suspended sentence to a 19-year-old high school student who pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated robbery.
The victim was a 24-year-old female. On March 31, 2021, at about 8.30pm, the victim was returning home from work after getting off a bus at Caubati where she lived.
As she was walking along the road, the offender in the company of another, grabbed her laptop bag and ran away through a track used as a shortcut to Caubati.
The bag had a laptop and a mobile phone, to a total value of $5300.
Justice Goundar said in this case, the violence used was minimum.
Justice Goundar said apart from the compelling mitigating factors, the offender was a high school student, who was genuinely remorseful and wished to complete his studies. He said the offender was remanded in custody in this case for six months and two weeks before he was released on bail.
After taking all these matters into account, Justice Goundar said the offender was convicted and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment which was suspended for two years.
