Respect Youths, Politicians Told

The Fiji National University Students Association (FNUSA) has labelled People’s Alliance Party (PAP) leader, Sitiveni Rabuka’s statement on cyberbullying by a prominent member of his party as vague and in need of more clarification.

“Our youth require straightforward answers and the statement by Mr Rabuka on FBC and Fiji Village does not address the very specific incident we raised,” FNUSA says in a statement.

“Politicians may think the youth have short memories, but make no mistake, we are quite aware of the past and what is presently going on around us and we request that the intelligence of Fijian youth not be underestimated.

“We would like Mr Rabuka to answer these specific questions:

  1. Does Mr Rabuka deem it acceptable for his party member, who had the PAP logo as her profile picture, to put derogatory and demeaning comments attacking a Fijian citizen and youth — because that is exactly what Lynda Tabuya has done.
  2. What action specifically will PAP take on Lynda Tabuya for putting derogatory remarks and adding to the cyberbullying on a non-political youth activist and citizen?
  3. What measures will Mr Rabuka specifically take to protect youth voices from future derogatory attacks from his party members, in particular voices that may not necessarily have the same opinions as them.”

National Federation Party Leader

FNUSA also labelled National Federation Party Leader, Biman Prasad’s name-calling and threats against the youth body as “dictatorial behaviour.

“It is not FNUSA but Prasad who has made false allegations against us by alleging that we are “FijiFirst stooges.

“FNUSA is a completely apolitical organisation with members of all political views and all religious backgrounds, and this cyberbullying started with a statement regarding NCDs.

“We demand that Prasad show proof that we are “FijiFirst stooges” as he claims in his unwarranted diatribe against the youth body.

“Prasad goes on further to allege that the FijiFirst party is using FNUSA as part of some tactical play, again an utter lie and, once again we demand that Biman Prasad show us evidence of this.

“It is not FNUSA who is asking people to vote for us, it is Biman Prasad and other politicians who are asking Fijians to vote for him.

“To be completely clear, the youth know that the opposition’s job is not to criticize everything and attack anyone with a different opinion, but the opposition and indeed every politician’s job is to tell us their plan to run the country and convince us that this plan is worthy of a vote.”

FNUSA urges Biman Prasad to do his job instead of threatening youth voices to silence them as we have just as much say as anyone else on national matters.

Finally, FNUSA is quite confused about what allegations NFP is talking about.

“We have never alleged that NFP or any political party is running fake accounts, but that fake accounts that support certain parties have been making derogatory attacks on the FNUSA President – This is clearly stated in our previous media release and the other parties obviously understood it.

“We clearly stated that we were just wondering why certain politicians are quietly sitting back while a youth gets cyberbullied viciously.

“A true leader defends the rights of all, regardless of whether they agree with their beliefs or not.”

FNUSA strongly urges Prasad to properly read and understand media releases before responding to save himself some blushes.
