Unfair!

This is how the Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho labelled comments made by the People’s Alliance Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka about Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

Mr Rabuka, during an interview with a former FBC announcer, revealed that the late Ratu Sir Kamisese knew about and supported his plans to overthrow the Timoci Bavadra-led government in 1987.

When questioned whether there was an investigation file opened in regards to the 1987 coup, Mr Qiliho said he would need to check their archives, but was certain that Mr Rabuka was covered under the immunity he gave himself in the 1990 and subsequent Constitutions.

“However, it is unfair to drag people who are no longer alive to defend themselves today. Very, unfair,” Mr Qiliho said.

Mr Qiliho was baffled why Ratu Mara’s name was being dragged around now on the eve of general elections.

He said it was easy to point at a man not alive anymore, adding that Mr Rabuka had all the opportunity to make the allegations when Ratu Mara was still alive.

“Why didn’t he do so then?”

Comments are being sought from Ratu Mara’s daughter Adi Koila Nailatikau.

Mr Rabuka could not be reached for a comment yesterday. The Fiji Sun had been told that he had gone to his village in Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu.
