Single mother-of-two, Kelera Salaba’s dream is to create a better future for her children.

This dream became a reality when she received a phone call from the Ministry of Employment two weeks ago.

She was informed she had been selected to be part of the Australia-Pacific Labour Scheme.

Ms Salaba is one of the many 186 Fijians who were given a certificate by the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Parveen Bala.

“I am grateful to the Fijian and Australian Government for the opportunity to help me build a better future for my children.

“I have plans to build a house for my family, buy a car and set up a farm back in the village.”

The 26-year-old said she had applied back in 2020 and thought her application had not been successful.

She received a call in February last year after a successful application.

Ms Salaba resigned from her job as an attendant at a taxi base and was supposed to leave for Australia in March.

Her flight was cancelled because of the COVID pandemic.

“I felt sad because I thought I was not selected and lost hope.

“I had been unemployed ever since I resigned and helped my mother in her restaurant that she operates near the Suva City Market.

“When the team from the ministry called me two weeks ago, I just could not contain my emotions.”

Meanwhile, Employment Minister Parveen Bala thanked the Australian government for the support and said they have employed 792 Fijians in the meat work industry to date.

175 workers are expected to leave for Australia today and the remaining 11 will depart on February 17.
