A landslide which occurred at Paipai, Lautoka has disrupted proper travels for more than 30 residents for more than two weeks now.

The landslide happened at the Deo Karan Road where about 37 people access the same road to travel to school and work on a daily basis.

The landslide happened following a heavy downpour at the beginning of the month.

Following this, Paipai resident, Rakesh Singh provided access through his land for residents to use for the time being.

Paipai advisory counselor, Shamshad Ali said this was the second time a landslide occurred in the area.

“The first time this happened was after Tropical Cyclone Winston near the nine homes,” he said.

“This is the only road access for the residents, this is difficult for them.

“However, as the advisory counselor of the area, I am thankful for Mr Singh for providing the piece of land to allow the residents to travel to and from their homes.”

He said although the residents were content to have some access, the happy moment would not last for long.

“The residents had cleared the trees and made an access for them to travel, this is a lot of hard work,” he added.

“The new access is just a way through for them to travel, but once it rains heavily again, there will definitely be another landslide here.”

Mr Ali said his team had been in recent contact with the relevant authorities concerning the issue.

Meanwhile, resident Rajendra Prasad said it was difficult to cross the new access and hoped some work could be done soon to fix the issue.
