A retired school teacher in Labasa is grateful to the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF)’s pension scheme for financially sustaining her livelihood in the last 16 years.

Unaisi Talolo, originally from Keteira Village in Moala Island, Lau opted for the pension scheme in 2006. She said the benefits of being a pensioner with FNPF was immense.

Ms Talolo said despite just allocating $20,000 from her final FNPF balance for her pension, she had so far received more than her allocation amount because of the benefits that were included with the scheme.

“The interest accumulated together with the pension scheme policy helped to sustain me with an additional $18,000 on a $200 per month allowance which I continue to receive to this day,” she said.

She is a former principal of Dreketi High School in Macuata and was a Senior Education Officer Northern (Secondary).

Ms Talolo was able to educate her six children from the education assistance received from FNPF and was also able to use her housing entitlement of $2000 during the construction of her house in Wailevu, outside Labasa.

“Pension scheme provides us, retirees, with a financial safe zone which we could rely upon to meet our daily needs,’’ Ms Talolo said.

She advised other members, who were yet to retire to start contributing more to their accounts and register for the pension scheme upon retirement. Ms Talolo is currently spending her retirement with her husband at their family sugarcane farm
