Sub-Variant Of Omicron Detected At Our Borders

Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Dr James Fong yesterday confirmed that a BA.2 sub-variant of the omicron strain was detected in a positive case at our borders.

The BA.2 sub-variant has also been detected in five African countries with recorded cases in New Zealand.

“We are aware of the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron, and we are also aware that past vaccine efforts are still covering this sub-variant,” Dr Fong said.

“We send specimens every now and again to Doherty (medical lab in Melbourne, Australia) so the selected groups that are priority are the ones that turn out positive at the border and also cases that are not responding well to treatment.

“With the BA.2 variant, we had detected it in one of our cases that became positive at the border.”

He said it was a threat to Fiji in the sense that it could come into the country, however it was not so much of a threat as the country was immunologically covered.

“We have had sufficient immunological cover to have us covered. I think we are still good.”
