When you fix our roads, you solve our problems.

This was the impassioned plea of the people of Ovalau during a talanoa session with the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum earlier this week.

Tavia villager Neumi Tamani said he had observed that it was only when a government delegation visited the island that the roads would be fixed.

Mr Tamani also raised his concerns on the high cost of transportation in particular carrier services.

He said this was a direct result of the high maintenance cost that truck owners had to pay because of the state of the roads on Ovalau.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum apologised to Mr Tamani saying that the Fiji Roads Authority was not supposed to be fixing roads just because a government minister was visiting the island.

“They should be doing the roadworks according to their plan and not because some ministers are coming.”

He assured villagers that the Fiji Roads Authority was looking at long term solutions to resolve the bad road issue in Ovalau.

He added the FRA has a major roadwork project for Ovalau and it would not be done overnight but it would be carried out and completed in the coming months.
