Fiji’s Honorary Consul for the Russian Federation Div Damodar has resigned from his role consistent with the Fijian Government’s position on the Russia and Ukraine issue.

In a statement, Mr Damodar said he watched with deep concern the escalating situation between Russia and Ukraine and calls on the Russian Federation and Ukraine to de-escalate the situation and commence a peaceful dialogue process.

“In assuming the role in 2019, it was my intent to explore and bridge constructive relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Fiji in the areas of economic/commerce and cultural initiatives of mutual interest,” Mr Damodar said.

“As Honorary Consul this position, whilst unpaid, was one that I value which allowed me to contribute directly to strengthening relations between our countries especially in exploring commercial pursuits of mutual interest.

“However, recognising the events of the past week between Russian and Ukraine, and the firm position taken by my Government, I cannot in good conscience, continue to serve in this position.”

He remains optimistic that the issue can be resolved through peaceful and constructive dialogue.

“My thoughts and prayers remain with the citizens who have been affected in both countries, most especially our women and children who, yet again, become the unintended victims caught up in such atrocity.”
