The Ministry of Health and Medical Services will employ 200 graduate nurses to fill vacancies before the end of this year.

This was confirmed by the Health Minister, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

He said this was part of the ministry’s commitment to increase its nurse/doctor to patient ratio.

More than 100 new doctors have been employed by the ministry recently to fill in available vacancies.

He said this was evident in the increase of doctors at health centres around the country depending on population count and health needs.

“So here in Dreketi Health Centre we used to have one doctor before, sometimes no doctors, but now we are able to have two doctors allocated on site,” he said.

“In Valelevu about 15 years ago, we had about five to seven doctors, now it has 16 doctors so these staff intake numbers have increased.”

Dr Waqainabete said these staff intake numbers had helped their staff to rest and recoup after a hectic shift since there were adequate medical staff now available.
