Six years ago, when Priyanka Priyashna Chand attained the Dux award at Naleba Primary School, she made it her personal goal to be the Dux once again in her final years of high school.

This came to fruition last week, when she was awarded the Dux of Naleba College in .

It was a proud moment for the 18-year-old, and especially for her proud parents, two brothers and teachers.

Apart from getting the top achiever award, Priyanaka also scooped the first prize, overall highest in English 77, Maths-95, Accounting 96, Economics 90, and Computer 94 with an overall total of 362/400.

“I saw the struggles my parents had to endure to provide for us, and I put it in my heart that I will work hard to give them a better life,” Priyanka said.

“My parents are my biggest motivators in my journey as through their consistent love and support made me work hard every day to achieve my goals and that is to do well in my studies.

“I struggled during the pandemic as online classes can never replace face-to-face learning.

“There were challenges as our time away from the classroom meant we did not have full time access to our teachers.

“We had our classes through Google Meet, Zoom and even Viber, but the presence of a teacher physically made a lot of difference so I was thankful when school reopened.”

She said while all her teachers were inspirational, her mathematics teacher, Ashwin Lal stood out. She thanked him for his teaching which she said got her hooked into loving mathematics as a subject, making her score 100 per cent during the Fiji School Leaving Certificate external exams.

The Head Girl also received the leadership award, Alumellu award (special award) for best student, highest scorer for Year 12 and Year 13 exams.

The Year 13 Commerce student has never missed a chance to participate in any other school-based activity such as taking part in religious programmes and in oratory contests.

Priyanka now has her eyes set on tertiary studies and aims to excel in attaining a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Information System and Accounting at the University of the South Pacific and to become an Accountant at an Ac- counting Firms.
