Bala Lauds Acts of Bravery by Fijians in Lismore
Help came with compassion and kindness from the Fijian seasonal workers in Lismore, Australia.

Parveen Kumar Bala led Government’s praises for the brave acts of the Fijian abattoir workers in Lismore, Australia last week.

The Minister for Employment, Productivity, Industrial Relations, Youth and Sports commended the group for helping rescue senior residents from a local nursing home when floods threatened the area.

The deployment of this group, according to Mr Bala, was a blessing that ultimately resulted in heroic efforts in saving the lives of Australian residents who were helpless and needed assistance during a life and death situation.

He said they were good ambassadors representing Fiji.

“For Fijians, flooding is a natural disaster that we normally experience and encounter year-in and year-out and for the boys to jump in to help is something that comes naturally during times of disasters, and if not handled with full caution and safety, this can lead to loss of lives,” Mr Bala said.

“Our sincere gratitude to this group of workers for their empathy towards the residents of the Lismore Nursing Home and for the critical role they have played in assisting local authorities and staff for the Nursing home in evacuating residents to safety.”

They were reminded to be good ambassadors while in Australia, and to fly the “Fijian Flag” high at all times, during the pre-departure briefing and farewell to these Fijian workers deployed under the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) on February 11, 2022.

“They were also encouraged to keep raising that standard to another level and to have their families and loved ones as their primary focus during these difficult times.”

He added that Fijians would certainly add value because of “our warm human nature of being loving and caring, compassionate, respect for the elderly” and culturally they would best fit for any assistance required which was of serious and vital importance.

Mr Bala expressed the Government’s gratitude to the Australian communities for placing their trust in our people, as well as the Australian Government and the PLS Australian Team for providing much-needed support to our Fijian workers in Australia through the Vuvale Partnership Agreement, which is a “win-win” situation for both countries during these trying times.
