Facility To Provide Fiji With Paediatric Doses

The COVAX facility will soon provide the Ministry of Health and Medical Services with doses of the pediatric Pfizer vaccines for children.

This was confirmed by Permanent Secretary Dr James Fong last week.

The pediatric Pfizer vaccines for children could be administered to children from ages five to eleven.

The COVAX facility was designed to assist vaccine purchases and distribution for poor and middle-income countries which were unable to compete in the open market and avoid inequities.

“For the pediatric dose we have had discussions and COVAX has come back to us and they are looking at giving us some doses of the pediatric doses for children,” Dr Fong said.

“There is a plan and I have given our numbers to them,” he said.

“I just don’t want to reveal the timing until I can see on paper when the delivery will be. I have a rough estimate on when the delivery could be made, but I would rather see the confirmation on paper then I will reveal more information on that.”

Dr Fong also said with the remaining 10 per cent of Fijians to be vaccinated, Pfizer vaccines would be administered for their first and second doses.

“One of the good things about the Pfizer stocks that we have now is that before we used AstraZeneca for the primary dose and then the booster was Pfizer,” he said. “Now with the last 10 per cent or so that is left, we are just going to just use Pfizer. We will also use Pfizer as a booster and we will use booster for children.”
