Like Father, Like Daughter
Eighteen-year-old Ria Dipashna Devi repeated her dad’s success story after she received the Dux award at Sangam SKM College in Nadi.
It was a proud moment for her father, Vinesh Mistry, as he watched his daughter receive her award and it reminded him of his day as the Head Boy and he had received the Dux prize of Sangam SKM College, in 1994.
Ms Devi, a Year 13 student scooped the top award for the academic year 2021 during the annual graduation ceremony on Thursday.
“It was a long road to reach this far, my father has been my mentor,” she said.
“There were a lot of things I did but all was the motivation of my dad’s Dux success story. Setting a goal will make it easy to achieve objectives.”
To top it all, she was presented with the Best Science student award, and scooped awards for the highest marks in English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
She hopes to further her education and attain a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the Fiji National University (FNU).
She was also the Dux student of Votualevu Public School in 2016.
Mr Mistry who has been a schoolteacher since 1998 and teaches at the same institution now says it was a proud moment for his family to witness his daughter receive many prestigious awards.
“I dedicate the credit to her mum and late grandmother for supporting her throughout her school life. And not forgetting Ria for being so dedicated towards her studies.”
