Fiji has a high rate of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) with chronic kidney disease currently the fourth leading cause of death.

There were studies done by Fiji Bureau of Statistics in the year 2012 which showed results of screening identified a relatively high number of suspected ESKD.

Diabetic nephropathy was the most common cause of ESKD and we cannot deny the fact that Fiji is ranked no.1 in the world for Diabetes, contributing to the high incidence of ESKD.

Improved screening, detection and management of kidney disease should be given more prominence in programmes to address non-communicable diseases in Fiji and the Pacific.

This calls for a desperate need to have the best medical resources available within the country to provide the excellent and affordable healthcare to our people.
