Villages Near Nadi River Bank Raise Landslide Issue With A-G

Asinate Dawai says, villages located near the Nadi riverbank need immediate assistance.
She said this assistance needed to be in terms of protection from the landslides that were occurring.
Ms Dawai, who hails from Narewa Village, raised the issue when the Attorney–General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during a presentation on the Nadi flood alleviation project during the consultation for the revised 2021-2022 National Budget at the Civic Centre on March 8.
“The major problem that we are seeing in the flooding period that we have just experienced recently starting from Yavusania Village right up to along Saunaka and Navoci, Namotomoto, Nakavu there are landslides which we are experiencing on the riverbank,” she said.
“Even at Narewa Village where I live, I always see that our houses are getting close to the river bank. It’s moving closer and we fear that we need an immediate help to protect the river banks of Nadi which will also protect the town too.”
She said the village of Yavusania in Nadi made an internal arrangement and managed to relocate a family from the villages living near the Nadi riverbank to Tunalia
“We seek your partnership for this immediate project in which we might need it earlier,” she said
“You have also enlightened the village representatives and also the communities in Nadi who attended the workshop at the Novotel. We were well informed of these strategies that you are putting in place to salvage the situation in Nadi and we thank you.”
The Attorney-General and Ministry of Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed he would look into the matter
“That’s something that we need to consider. We can get back to you. I can’t even answer now, but definitely something that we need to consider,” he said
