There is no rush to complete the Korosomo Bypass Road between Seaqaqa and Labasa along Nabouwalu Highway.

Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) chief executive officer Kamal Prasad said this, adding that the temporary road, though not resilient, was serving the intended purpose.

“Meanwhile, the available funding is being prioritised on locations where there is urgent need for road upgrade,” Mr Prasad said.

“Issues with Land Owning Unit (LOU) has been resolved and now FRA is awaiting EFL (Energy Fiji Limited) on the relocation of four existing Poles at Korosomo bypass – entry and exit point.”

He added the temporary works on the existing alignment was being monitored periodically to watch for any settlement prevalent with massive fills in a short period.

He confirmed that to date no obvious settlement has been observed.

Update on the Korosomo Bypass Road design

Mr Prasad said the design drawings and tender documents were ready.

“As soon as the funding situation with COVID normalises, we will recommence with the construction,” he said.

“The bypass will give us a resilient road which will be able to sustain long periods of rain and prevent the slips that occurred on the existing alignment.”
