More than 20 teams are expected to be part of the action at the inaugural $50,000 Fijian Cup 9s two-day tournament, scheduled at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, later in November.

Fiji National Rugby League acting chief executive officer Don Natabe said: “We are confident about the prospects of international Nines football becoming an annual series as part of International Rugby League’s multi-year calendar.

“We had initially planned for 16 teams, right now there are 20 and a possibility of spilling over.

“The 9s tournament is also accommodating regional clubs from New Zealand and Australia.”

In applauding their partner TourismHQ, Natabe said the Fijian Cup was going to be a game-changer for Rugby League in the country, aiming at the positive impact on the economy also.

TourismHQ managing director Richard Henry said: “Open to international entry, the Fijian Cup 9s is an exciting new Rugby League tournament, which we intend to grow into a renowned annual fixture on the regional calendar and have Fiji on show for visitors and viewers.

“We offer this world-class tournament as an all-inclusive holiday with flights, accommodation, entry and transfers; with the added encouragement for international players to bring their partners and children to enjoy their time in paradise.”
