Quiet Holi Celebration For Visama Community
Families of Visawa Feeder Road in Nausori mark Holi celebrations.

Holi celebration will be a lot quieter for Krish Maharaj and his family of Visama Feeder Road, Nausori.

As families and friends from the Visama community in Nausori have migrated over the years, Holi celebrations have slowly died down.

Holi is a significant even in the Hindu calendar that celebrates the festival of colors signifying victory of good over evil.

But for many, it is a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships, and is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.

Mr Maharaj who is a local priest for Adi Shakti Amba Mata Mandir in Nausori said, people from the community have also started moving elsewhere because of the extension of the Nausori Airport.

“So, we have less people with us to celebrate Holi.”

“Instead of celebrating Holi here at Visama, we will go to village temple at Visama Sanatan School so we can gather as a community.”

“Adding to this, families have struggled through the pandemic and won’t be spending much like before for Holi celebrations,” he said.

Mr Maharaj adds that the pandemic has also motivated families to pray together.

He said family prayers we’re similar to the teachings of the Holi celebration.

“Holi teaches us to love one another just like the colors we use to celebrate the special day.”

“We use different colors but when we combine it, color becomes one,” he said.

Mr Maharaj plans to celebrate Holi with his extended family over sweets and prayers.
