The Fiji Airways men’s 7s team for the HSBC series in Singapore will be selected after the 46th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this weekend.

The Singapore leg will be held on April 9-10.

This was confirmed by men’s rugby sevens head coach, Ben Gollings, yesterday while the sevens training squads were training at Albert Park, Suva.

Meanwhile the training squads; Fiji Barbarians and Fiji Warriors are part of this week’s Marist 7s with the New Zealand men’s team also on board.

Fiji Warriors are in Red Pool C with Wadigi Salvo, JR Kava Lionhearts and Tau Sports ITMS Senikau Rugby while Fiji Barbarians are in the Blue – Pool K with Army Red, Island Magic Daveta and Caginivaturu Explore Inn.

“With the two squads, we are narrowing our focus towards the team that is going to Singapore,” Gollings said.

“Last weekend was great for us, it made the selection process a little bit more challenging, that was what we had wanted.

“We look forward to this week, because the squad is going to shift – one is made up of the most likely to be going and the other would be playing for an opportunity.

“With the inclusion of New Zealand, it is fantastic as they add to the competition. They were great last weekend; I’m sure they will come out firing again. Hope we get to play them again.”

The English man also indicated that the Marist sevens would be a platform to identify talent from to join the extended squads.

“In regards to our development we will continue scouting.

“While we are busy with two teams we are also keeping an eye out new talents.

“It’s been really good, we are enjoying Fiji. I feel at home here and the squad have been good. They listen, they learn, and they put into practice what we want and I can’t really ask much more what we are at the moment.

The Marist 7s starts tomorrow with the women’s and under-21 games. The men’s will start on Friday while eliminations and the finals are on Saturday at the ANZ Stadium.
