The Fijian Pearls bounced back to beat Samoa 55-44 in their first game of the PacificAus series in Australia on Monday.

The Pearls last met Samoa in the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool where they lost 55-54.

Netball Fiji chief executive officer, Vivian Koster has applauded the Fijians for winning their first match for the series.

Fiji and Samoa are placed 15 and 16 respectively on the current World Netball rankings.

“We are very happy with the performance they have put out against Samoa on Monday,” Koster said yesterday.

“We have not played in such a long time and how fortunate we were to have such a worthy opponent.

“We last met Samoa in 2019. Two years on we meet them again and won by 10 points.

Koster added the series was a good preparation ground for the Pearls before they host the Oceania World Cup qualifier at home in July.

“It was such a fantastic game to watch, the level of skills that our players showed and we could not be more proud of the team.

“And we are hosting the Oceania qualifiers in July where we will also play against Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Cook Islands.

“This tournament is really a good one for us on what we need to go and to improve on and what we are doing well before we prepare for the World Cup in South Africa.”

The Pearls played Tonga yesterday and will take on PNG at 4:30 pm today.

Games are live on FBC TV and Mai TV.
