Vunidawa is one of five economic  trade centres that have been identified as growth areas.

It has the potential to be the economic-centre for Naitasiri.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport permanent secretary, Shaheen Ali, made the comments during land use consultations in Suva yesterday.

He said strategies for the development at Vunidawa were being drawn up, in line with the National Development Plan and the ministry’s operational plan.

“With more people moving into urban centres, we need to ensure that in the long run, we are able to grow sustainably,” Mr Ali said.

“Areas such as Vunidawa need to provide the amenities and opportunities for the people of Naitasiri.”

Mr Ali said stakeholders must work together to create a business environment outside urban centres.

Meanwhile, senior town planning officer, Maselina Rokowati, provided an overview of the project during the first consultation with stakeholders.

Another round of public consultations will be held in April.

In June, the final and approved draft will be presented to Nausori Town Council.
