Health Ministry Keeps Close Watch On Leptospirosis Cases

The outbreak of Leptospirosis predominantly in the Lami to Nausori area is now an area that the Ministry of Health continues to watch with interest.
Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said leptospirosis was not only common in hotspot areas in the western parts of Viti Levu but also common in least expected areas.
“We have had dengue cases in the Labasa area and also last year our leptospirosis outbreak predominantly in the Lami to Nausori area in the Central Division. We continue to watch that with interest,” Dr Waqainabete said.
“The great thing is that the numbers are coming down overall and this is testament to the hard work that has been done by our partners and the Ministry of Health but also the fact that we have had dry weather which has helped.”
The ministry in its last update confirmed that there had been 1230 lab-confirmed cases of leptospirosis this year.
In the Central Division, there have been 436 cases, in the Western Division, there have been 488 cases, 270 cases in the Northern Division, and 36 cases in the Eastern Division.
For the national leptospirosis hospital admissions, so far this year there have been 380 people admitted in total.
