Cop Appears For Rape Charge, Bailed

A Police officer who is accused of raping a 17-year-old student has been granted bail by the High Court in Labasa.

He appeared before Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe on Wednesday.

The alleged incident happened on January 29, 2022 in Labasa.

Rikshal Dayal of Sarju Prasad Esquire appeared on behalf of the accused’s defence lawyer Jitendra Reddy who could not attend to the matter.

The accused’s eldest sister and brother-in-law appeared as sureties and were told to sign a bail bond of $1000.

They told the court that the accused would live with them at Valelevu in Suva.

Judge Justice Rajasinghe ordered that the accused must report to Valelevu Police Station every Wednesday and Saturday of the month.

He also instructed him not to interfere with witnesses, not to reoffend and surrender his passport.

The case has been adjourned for mention on April 4 at the High Court in Labasa.
