Out of the 29 deaths recorded due to Leptospirosis this year, 21 deaths were recorded in the Western Division.

This was confirmed by Ministry of Health and Medical Services Permanent Secretary Dr James Fong yesterday.

He said the division reported the most number of deaths during this outbreak of leptospirosis.

“Sadly, there were two more deaths caused by leptospirosis to report since the last update on March 18,” he said.

“The two deaths were a 23-year-old female from Ba on March 19, and a 13-year-old from Nadi on March 11.

“There have been a total of 29 deaths from leptospirosis this year, with 21 in the Western Division, three in Central, and five in the North.”

He also confirmed that there had been 1394 lab-confirmed cases of leptospirosis this year, with 164 new cases to report since the last update a week ago.

“Case numbers have declined below the outbreak threshold in Central in the last week,” he said.
