Typhoid case numbers in Togovere Village in the Ra Province have increased from five cases to eight in the last two days.

The village was designated an area of public health concern by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services on Tuesday and has been on a seven-day lockdown since.

Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr James Fong, said there were previously three reported deaths from the village and now one case was in critical condition at the Lautoka Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“This evidence of spread and severe impact has required an immediate escalation of public health measures towards a seven-day lockdown period that will restrict movement and assembly of persons,” he said.

“Individuals will also be screened and treatment provided with the aim to eradicate any ongoing disease transmission within Togovere Village.

“Individuals from nearby villages and areas who may have attended recent social functions at Togovere Village have been advised to watch out for any symptoms they may experience and seek medical advice for treatment.”

He added that there had been 73 lab-confirmed cases of typhoid fever this year.

“Nationally, and in the Central, Northern, and Eastern Divisions, typhoid cases are below the average, or at the average numbers expected for this time of the year.

“However, in the Western Division, there are localised outbreaks in communities in Ra, Lautoka, and Nadi. Sadly, there have been five5 deaths from typhoid fever this year. There have been no new deaths reported since the last update on March 8.”
