A Smart And Responsible Budget, Says Uni Students Body

The Fiji National University Students Association (FNUSA) commends the Fijian Government on a well balanced, innovative and responsible National Budget.
FNUSA welcomed the decision to raise the minimum wage to $4 in phases, and in particular, appreciates the Government’s due diligence and consultations before making such an increase.
The association said they heard promises about the minimum wage going up to $4, $5, and even $10 by some parties, but none of them have been able to explain the impact of such promises. However, the Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, explained the impacts quite well.
“Students and youth are also among the most financially vulnerable in society, and as such, we appreciate the Government’s efforts to protect us,” said FNUSA president, Ketan Lal.
“The fact that proper research was undertaken before such an increase gives the youth a lot of comfort.
“Students are vulnerable, and we appreciate the government’s efforts to care for us.
“FNUSA appreciates the free dental and medical practitioner schemes and the free medicine scheme. These schemes will ensure students can access not only high-quality medical care, but care that is closer to them and much faster as a result of the reduced strain on the public medical system.”
FNUSA also wholeheartedly supports the zero-rated tax initiative for basic and essential everyday items.
Finally, the association appreciates the Fijian Government’s efforts to reduce housing expenses for everyone, especially students.
“Rent is the largest living expense for a significant number of students at FNU, and by limiting the commission realtors can take, we are guaranteed to see lower rental prices in the near future,” he said.
