Mother Of 3 Hopes To Empower Women Of Doi

When women are empowered, the community they live in is empowered, making the world a better place.

Sereana Usumake made this comment after graduating from Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Center last Friday.

Leaving her husband and three children behind in Doi, Ono-i-lau was not an easy decision for Ms Usumake, but she made the decision knowing that she would return to the village with new skills.

She hoped to empower the lives of women in her village and create a better life for her family.

For the past three weeks she has been committed to the course of learning new skill sets.

“This does not end here for me,” she said.

“There are other ladies in the village who wished they could be here but are not able to.

“When I go back I will pass on these new skills we have learnt and let women be empowered so that they are able to share the same skills as what we have learnt here with sewing.”

She said with the limited resources of earning an income available in the islands and she was grateful to the training centre for the opportunity.

“It will be a game changer for the many women that are in the remote parts of Fiji just like us.

“Though isolated far away from the mainland, our presence here assures us that we are not forgotten.

“We only hope that many opportunities like this one will be created for women from other islands.”
