Women competition will now be part of the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association bouts at the Commander Stan Brown Gym in Walu Bay, Suva.

Last Saturday for the first time women boxing were no longer regarded as exhibition matches.

FABA treasurer and competition chairman, Ana Ledua was pleased to see interests from many young women who were at the programme.

Ledua said out of Saturday’s 23 bouts- three bouts were for women boxing while three exhibition matches were for the junior category (both girls and boys).

“The interest has been slowly growing over the years,” Ledua said.

“A few other women came to the weigh-in but we did not find their match (according to their weight).

“Usually the women participated in exhibition matches and now to have their bouts show the growth of women’s participation in boxing.”

She said the third round of the amateur boxing competition would be on April 23 and they are expecting more women to participate.

Ledua added these competitions are build-up to the Nationals King of the Ring and the Golden Gloves Championship to be held at the end of the year. The dates will be confirmed later.
