Man Charged With Sacrilege On Remand

Aman in his 20’s from Cunningham, Suva has been remanded by the Magistrates Court in Nasinu for allegedly breaking into a church and its pastor’s residence on the night of March 28.
Aseri Batiratu appeared before magistrate Sofia Hamza yesterday charged with one count of sacrilege, two counts of theft and two counts of burglary.
Batiratu is accused of breaking into the Navuloa Methodist Church in Nakasi on March 28 stealing a tripod stand, a bluetooth studio mixer, a video camera and a headphone worth around $470.
It is further alleged that on the same day, Batiratu broke into another property close to the church.
At the property, he allegedly stole one laptop, one Samsung phone and two circular saw worth close to $2500.
Police prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the accused had pending cases before the court and had previously been issued a bench warrant.
Batiratu sought legal aid representation for his case.
The case has been adjourned to April 13.
