A Koronivia couple, accused of the rape and human trafficking of their daughter, have entered not guilty pleas to the charges.

The accused persons, represented by lawyer Abhay Singh, appeared at the High Court in Suva on Wednesday.

The man is charged with two counts of rape while the couple together were charged with one count each of sexual assault and of domestic trafficking in children.

It is alleged that the man raped his daughter who was under the age of 13 years between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012, in Koronivia, Nausori.

It is also alleged that the man raped his daughter between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.

It is alleged that the couple procured the complainant to watch the couple having sex between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.

It is also alleged that the couple between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018, facilitated the transportation of the complainant from Koronivia to Siris Apartment in Nausori with the intent for the complainant to be used to provide sexual services to another at Siris Apartment.

State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Swastika Sharma told the court that the state was not relying on the caution interview statements of the accused persons.

She also sought seven days to file a bail response for the accused persons after Mr Singh informed the court that the accused persons had children who were not able to attend school as both parents were in remand.

Judge Justice Kulatunga Mudiyanselage Gihan Himanshu Kulatunga said the children’s future were at stake while the parents were both in remand facilities.

He asked the state to advise the court of their position on bail earliest by Monday.

The matter has been adjourned to April 11.

Both accused persons are remanded in custody.
